Digital conference 15-18 October 2020


A chairde, unfortunately, due to the health and safety concerns regarding Covid-19 and due to travel and social gathering restrictions, we will be unable to host the 2020 Celtic Students Conference in UCD this year [we had postponed it to the end of August].

BUT the good news is that we have instead decided to host a DIGITAL CONFERENCE online, on the 15 - 18 October 2020. We hope that you will still join us! More information will be coming soon. In the meantime, stay safe!

Learning Breton / Deskiñ brezhoneg

     Demat deoc’h ! I have the immense pleasure of sharing with you, within the Learning Celtic Languages series, resources on how to learn Breton. This Celtic language from outside the British Isles, is a Brythonic language, thus partial intercomprehension does exist with Welsh and more so Cornish. Today, standardised Breton, or peurunvan , is composed of KLT and Gwenedeg. KLT stands for Kerne-Leon-Treger which were the main bishoprics of Lower Brittany. Gwenedeg, or vannetais, is spoken in Bro-Wened and is known as the most linguistically conservative form of Breton, it’s writing, pronunciation and certain words differ from that of KLT.      Nota bene: Upper Brittany is everything not highlighted in bright colours on the map below, this is where people speak Gallo – the second language of Brittany. We are Carantes (from Proto-Celtic * karants ), and we want to invite you to help protect the field we all love from the global growth of Fascism and Far-Right movements. But, if you want the full story, here it is.  We are a group of young scholars who met at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies' Summer School in 2022, who, after the episode of the Association of Celtic Students' Podcast about Celtic Studies, Fascism, and the Far-Right , came together to form a reading group. As time went on, supervisors, senior scholars, fellow students, and others expressed interest in supporting us and getting involved.
