The Master in Celtic Studies of Brest is delighted to open its blog !
Dear Celtic Students from all around the world,
The Master in Celtic Studies of the University of Western Brittany recently opened its own blog !
For some context, our Master's program, entitled ‘Celtic Languages and Cultures in Contact’, which was founded in 2017, consists of two strands : medieval and modern. The professors offer a variety of approaches to Brittany, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, giving students the opportunity to research literature, history, sociology and linguistics. The Master is affiliated to the Centre for Research in Breton and Celtic and is the only one in Brittany/France to encompass all of the Celtic countries, proposing Welsh, Irish and Breton courses, be it modern or medieval languages.
Although one of the graduating classes before ours had already set up the “Celtic Breizh” website for future students, it was unable to be maintained due to the lack of rigorous handover between the different classes. At the end of the first year, we decided to open a fresh new blog on the website https.//hypotheses.org, which is powered by OpenEditions and features blogs run by social science specialists and enthusiasts. It's a reliable database, recognized in the academic world. The opening of a research blog will give greater visibility to the work of students in this Master's program.
After long procedures, the blog was opened in September 2024 and we started publishing in November 2024.This project enables students to create a network with a recognised scientific community (since the Hypothèses platform specialises in the humanities and social sciences) on their various research topics as part of their studies. By regularly consulting and posting articles on the blog, it is also an excellent way of keeping abreast of
scientific advances in each student's specific field, particularly with a view to furthering their studies, especially at PhD level.
Our homepage may be in French, the articles are written both in English and in French, and we hope to have articles written in Celtic languages in the future. We decided that there should be two main categories, medieval and modern, following the two strands of our Master’s program ; they are divided in subcategories such as ‘literature’, ‘sociolinguistics’, and so on.
Since we are only five to manage the blog, we take turns for the publications, and will pass down our roles to the next generation at the end of the semester.
Given the recent budget cuts and the lack of students interested in Celtic studies, we received the devastating news that our Master’s program suspended its applications for next year, and we don't know if it will survive in the future. It's important more than ever to give visibility to Celtic studies in Brittany and France.
Anyway, here is the link ! We hope to have many curious visitors. We also welcome publications written by former students who have graduated but would still be interested to publish under the banner of this Master's Program.
